Windsor Students' Local Community Project

22nd March 2024

By Eleanor, Year 9

As a part of our project helping people in the local community, a selection of keen readers have volunteered their time to spend with some of the Lapal House Care Home residents. So far, we have had four visits, where we have shared some of our favourite books and poetry. Over the past few visits, we have shared past times and funny experiences to get to know more about each other.

In our most recent visit to Lapal House, we spent time talking to the residents and sharing Easter poetry. We discussed our favourite poems and books and had some refreshments. Then, we unboxed six iPads Windsor Academy Trust have kindly donated. We showed the residents some key features of the iPad, and the variety of apps and the internet they can access. We played music and sang with the residents, and found some apps they might like to have on their iPads.

I really enjoy visiting the residents of Lapal House. They all seem to genuinely enjoy our company, and look forward to the poems we will read them, as well as the opportunity to just talk to us. It is such a nice thing to do, and they all seem to look forward to it just as much as we do!"

Year 10 student, Daria, said:

The visit to Lapal House was very pleasant and gratifying; speaking with the residents and listening to their stories really allowed us to form strong and everlasting connections with them and the community of Halesowen. Demonstrating how to use more advanced technology to the older generation was a very enjoyable experience, which I think the residents also found both interesting and refreshing. It was great getting to know them and having relaxing, meaningful conversations with different people.’’
