Business Studies and Economics
We aim to provide all students with broad, balanced and relevant business, finance and enterprise experiences.
We are committed to providing first class learning for all students helping them succeed and maximise their potential. In 2011 Ofsted commended our teaching of Business Studies describing our teachers as having good subject knowledge and being:
“Highly successful in engaging students’ interest and involvement through a wide range of relevant and well-designed tasks and activities, making excellent and frequent use of topical, real-life examples to help students learn”.
What We Offer
Key Stage 4
Students have the option to take AQA GCSE Business or BTEC Business level 2. If students opt for GCSE, this is an examination assessed course that has a focus on developing analytical and evaluative skills. 25% of the GCSE is controlled assessment and 75% is examination. Alternatively, following a BTEC programme is an exciting way to study. It gives students the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding that they will need in the world of work.
Key Stage 5
Our Sixth Form students can choose from a range of courses including, AQA A level Business and AQA A level Economics, BTEC National Award or the BTEC National Certificate. All Sixth form Business lessons take place in our state of the art Business Centre, located at Trinity Point, Halesowen. Here students are co-located with fully operational business, bringing business education to life.
“Business is a highly popular choice of subject. The proportion of students choosing business at Key Stage 4 and in the sixth form is well above the national average.” Ofsted 2011.
We believe enterprise and creativity are central to economic success. These critical skills will enable our students to thrive in an ever demanding global economy.
In Business Studies, students have the opportunity to gain a certificate in Young Enterprise, setting up a real company and competing with other schools across the world. In the past 3 years we have be very successful, winning over 21 awards. Students also have the opportunity to apply for business grants to start their own business. Guidance is provided by our teachers, as well as our very own Business Consultant, located at the Business Centre.
It is also extremely important for our students to see how the real world of business operates, so we visit companies, invite in entrepreneurs and business people and offer mini enterprise initiatives. Recent visits have been made to factories, football clubs, the fashion industry and a trade fayre. Ofsted commended us for this in 2011 saying:
“Outstanding provision throughout the school for economics and business understanding, personal finance and enterprise capability. The provision is structured and co-ordinated very well into a broad, diverse and coherent programme”.
Within the Business Department, students are given the opportunity to become Business Advisors. This prestigious position allows students to have a voice within the department and assist and run enterprise activities within the school, as well as connecting with high profile companies – there may even be a business lunch provided!
